Open Sensor Platforms: The Sensor Web Enablement Framework and Beyond

Over the last years, more and more sensor systems emerged that can not only be accessed but also controlled and configured using the Internet. This trend allows mobile applications that rely on sensor data; however, the access and configuration of sensor systems is a tedious task. As many sensor manufacturers implement their own protocols, there are many communication protocols. Although unifyi...

Mashups for Community Aware Sensor Processing with SCAMPI

Building up community web sites for sensor-based application like weather portals, traffic information, or stock data are problematic when the members of the community have little knowledge about data processing and visualization. Available middlewares and platforms do offer sufficient services to help users to fulfill important tasks on the way to their own community platform like filtering, a...

XGSN: An Open-source Semantic Sensing Middleware for the Web of Things

We present XGSN, an open-source system that relies on semantic representations of sensor metadata and observations, to guide the process of annotating and publishing sensor data on the Web. XGSN is able to handle the data acquisition process of a wide number of devices and protocols, and is designed as a highly extensible platform, leveraging on the existing capabilities of the Global Sensor Ne...

Access control in ultra-large-scale systems using a data-centric middleware

The primary characteristic of an Ultra-Large-Scale (ULS) system is ultra-large size on any related dimension. A ULS system is generally considered as a system-of-systems with heterogeneous nodes and autonomous domains. As the size of a system-of-systems grows, and interoperability demand between sub-systems is increased, achieving more scalable and dynamic access control system becomes an im...

Mobile Data Collection in Sensor Networks: The TinyLIME Middleware

In this paper we describe TinyLIME, a novel middleware for wireless sensor networks that departs from the traditional setting where sensor data is collected by a central monitoring station, and enables instead multiple mobile monitoring stations to access the sensors in their proximity and share the collected data through wireless links. This intrinsically context-aware setting is demanded by a...
